Match Reports for 11/9/04
Ollerton played hosts to NDL1 League favourites North Derbyshire and fell 10-31 in this close encounter which had North Derbyshire on the ropes for long periods before their elusive speedy backs took a hand to open up a sizable point’s difference that did not reflect the forward domination and territory that Ollerton had enjoyed.
From the kick off Ollerton were pinned in their own 22 by the combination of North Derbyshire’s mobile pack and ever threatening backs which saw the ball spun wide to their number 14 on the wing who outpaced the Ollerton defence for North Derbyshire’s first try which was duly converted. 0-7
North Derbyshire fed their backs whenever possible and were rewarded again by another carbon copy try from their winger who raced in for his second try to bring the score to 0-12 with only fifteen minutes played.
Ollerton then seemed to learn from their earlier mistakes and tightened up in defence as the forwards started to dominate and were unlucky not to have points on the board from a penalty move just ten metres out.
The forward pressure continued which resulted in an Ollerton scrum deep in North Derbyshire territory from which number 8 Mark Laughton made his mark, by picking up from the back of the scrum, evading several tackles to feed veteran winger Eric Cranmer who rounded his man to score in the corner.
An excellent touchline conversion by Full Back Kevin Cogan added the extra two points. 7-12
The Ollerton pressure in the forwards combined with very little space for North Derbyshire’s backs saw Ollerton take control of the game towards the half way mark.
Full Back Cogan went close from a penalty attempt on 35 minutes and the Ollerton forwards were rewarded for all their hard work by a penalty just before half time which was converted by Cogan bringing the half time score to 10-12.
The second half started with North Derbyshire kicking with the wind behind them and were immediately very dangerous when the ball was spun out to their elusive winger having created the overlap, luckily for Ollerton the ball failed to go to hand and a fine opportunity was missed.
The score remained fixed at 10-12 for some 20 minutes with North Derbyshire starting to bring their backs more and more into the game and Ollerton making things very difficult with some fine forward play and excellent tackling in the backs.
With 20 minutes to go, Ollerton were pinned in their own 22 by North Derbyshire who were using the wind to their full advantage, the North Derbyshire backs were lined up ready only for their scrum half to knock on, scrum to Ollerton.
North Derbyshire managed to pinch the ball and fed the ball down the blindside to their winger who was hoping for his third of the game, this wasn’t to be as a crunching tackle from debut winger Dale Garrett bought another North Derbyshire attack to a close.
North Derbyshire opened the gap with about eighteen minutes remaining when the ball was won from a line out and fast hands saw their right winger race in under the posts which was converted 10-19
This was repeated again some five minutes later when North Derbyshire took a quick tap penalty unleashing their right wing again who raced in despite the close attention of Ollerton’s number 8 Laughton. North Derbyshire failed to convert. 10-24
North Derbyshire had now realised that it was their backs that were the ones who were going to win the game for them and span the ball out at every opportunity.
An Ollerton attack broke down, mid field and the North Derbyshire scrum half nipped in to feed their right winger who sped in for his third which was converted.
Final Score 10-31
Ollerton Manager Steve Hooper later said that this was a fine Ollerton performance where we dominated for large periods of the game. We were beaten by some superb individual performances and not by a team performance.
We are getting better and better and if this North Derbyshire side are the favourites then there are a few teams out their who will not relish a visit to the new boys in NDL1
Ollerton 2nds- No Game
Worksop 3rds 7-33 Ollerton 3rds
Ollerton 3rds travelled away to Worksop for their second game of the season and came away with a stunning 33-7 win.
The first half found Ollerton under pressure right from the start with the Worksop forwards in control and were rewarded by a try on the 20 minute mark which was converted 7-0
This pressure continued throughout the first half with some frantic defending by Ollerton who’s backs were marshalled by veteran centre Rob Berry.
As the half time whistle blew, Ollerton new that they may have weathered the storm and it was all to play for in the second half.
The second half saw a dramatic change round as the Ollerton forwards took control, feeding the backs whenever possible stretching the Worksop defence.
Some excellent work in the scrum saw Ollerton take a ball against the head, allowing no8 Mark Emmonds to pick up and crash over under the posts which was converted by John Etches. 7-7
Within 10 minutes Ollerton were in the lead thanks to a rolling maul which saw hooker Eddie Jackson bursting through from close range with two Worksop players on his back,this again was converted by Etches. 7-14
Some good work in the lineout by no5 Allan Black saw the Ollerton backs receiving plenty of good ball which they made full use of with debut centres Dave Clifton and John Etches both collecting a try each to bring the score to 7-26 with ten minutes remaining
The final play of the match saw good interplay between Dave Price and Mark Emmonds with second row Pete Davies breaking clear for his first and Ollerton’s fifth try.
